I can sympathize. As much as I would like to understand Descartes, Locke, Kant, etc., I'm afraid I would spend weeks reading and get very little out of it.
I found the novel Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder to be an enjoyable and helpful introduction to philosophy--about on the level of the de Botton lecture.
