You wondered what a psychologist would say about Sue. Well, I am a psychologist, so I have been tempted to take a crack at diagnosing her for several days. The problem is that I haven't read Jude the Obscure in years, but I think I may remember enough about Sue to try. As I recall, she is manipulative, inconstant, and can be inappropriately flirty. She does not take responsibility for her actions. Despite her tendency to tease, she is revolted and disgusted by sex.
If this is correct, then I would submit that Sue has a Histrionic Personality Disorder with Borderline traits. She presents a superficial impression of a high, neurotic level of functioning, but she actually seems to have a lower level of organization. She is in many ways a good old-fashioned Freudian hysteric.
