My sentiments exactly.
Now, here is what I think *WE* should do. First let me clarify who we are. We are an authority. We have been around for for quite a few years now and our collective readings are nothing to sneeze at. Why don't we make our own list and impose it on the rest of the world?
It needs a very good title. The title must explain why we felt the need for yet another list. Like Joffre's "Yes, those are great books, well worth your time, but here are some books we think Harold sells short." Something ridiculously long and explanatory.
Then we will come up with a system to choose the ReadLit Ultimate List.
We should have vote and veto rights. We should not veto a book just because we didin't like it. Books should be vetoed out only when we passionately think that they don't belong to a great books list. For instance, I didn't like The Sheltering Sky but I would not veto it because I don't think it is a really really bad book. But I would veto The Kite Runner because I think it is absolutely awful, really truly a bad book.
A good and fair system which would lend to a list we all agree upon.
What do you say?
