As much as I like lists, I begin to feel there are too many, and that they are getting too long. A thousand books? The good thing, maybe, about such a list is that you see more than the usual suspects. I don't know why somebody doesn't just constructively respond to Bloom's Western Canon by saying, "Yes, those are great books, well worth your time, but here are some books we think Harold sells short." As for this list, when I see Steven King and Harry Potter included, it loses its credibility for me; I don't trust any of the suggestions for books I don't already know. I also dislike their title. I think there are books everybody should read. They are not all novels, and their number is probably less than fifty. I wonder how many of the committee that made this list have read all 1000 or have any plan to.
