: That last paragraph... Did you understand what they
: are saying?
Currently they automatically delete the oldest message thread to keep us at a 1000-message limit. This is based on the date that thread began.
If we switch to "Sort by Activity" they will still automatically delete the oldest thread, but "oldest" will be defined as the one that has gone the longest without any new messages being posted to it.
This shouldn't make that much of a difference except for the situation they describe where we keep adding messages to the same thread all the time, it stays on top of the message list, grows and grows until it exceeds 1000 messages and, being the only thread left, gets deleted in its entirety to keep us within the limit. A bizarre and unlikely scenario.
The only disadvantage I can see to using the "Sort by Activity" option is where we have two or three threads in a row discussing the same book. If we post replies to one, but not the others, they will become separated by other newer threads on different topics.
I think it's worth a try, and it will definitely solve the problem of overlooking replies to old threads (by new members and old). There have been times when I wanted to add something to a discussion several weeks old, but didn't bother because I knew no one would notice it. We can always switch back if we don't like it.
(Now if only there were a fix for all the times I click "Preview" to check my message, then forget to click "Post," close the browser, and lose everything I typed.)
