A couple of weeks ago the Guardian published a list titled "1000 Novels Everyone Must Read."
Here is the introductory page: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/series/1000novels
And here is the full list: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/jan/23/bestbooks-fiction
I like to use lists such as this when deciding what to buy and read, but this one is disappointing. While it includes many of the classics and contemporary works you would expect, it also branches into such fields as detective fiction and graphic novels. The editors explain that this is not a "1000 best" list, but is meant to represent the full spectrum of the novel. I have no argument against that; sampling representive works from various genres sounds like a good idea. What I don't like is that they've included as many as five novels apiece from some of these authors. That's too big a sample for me if it's a genre I don't particularly care for.
