You probably ought to avoid The Tale of Genji in which nearly everyone, male and female, longs for the day when he or she can become a monk or nun and retire from the world.
I like it. But I tend to ignore the 'turning to God' aspect of it. I'm agnostic myself and lately, even a skeptic. I'm all for turning away from the vulgar world though, and if a nunnery gives you a place to do that, it sounds good to me. I wish I could go to some sort of monastery where my job would be to copy great books by hand, and I'd hear nothing of the outside world, and I'd have two or three like-minded people to talk with.
I haven't read Nest of the Gentry. The only Turgenev I've read is Fathers and Sons which I enjoyed.
