I thinned out my book collection by buying an electronic book reader--and paying for it by selling the books it replaced. Virtually every major work published in English before 1923 is free electronically. I still keep nice hardback editions, but not the paperbacks.
By the way, there is now a Project Gutenberg web site for Canada, featuring books whose copyrights have expired in Canada but not the US.

And there is also Project Gutenberg Australia. They have quite a few books that you can't get from the US site, including, for example, Gone with the Wind and most of the works of Virginia Woolf.
