I had to smile reading your various ways of dealing with book purchases and bringing them into the house. This one issue we don't have in this household. If we run out of bookshelf space we probably will move to another place that has more walls...
We have books in all rooms except for the bathroom and the kitchen. We talk about the books one of us wants to buy and usually the other agrees or accepts the choices. Many of our interests are complementary or overlap so that we can at least appreciate the other's obsessions.
I have decided, though, to borrow more fiction from the library - fiction that I find interesting but don't need to see on my bookshelf. Also when I get a book in the original, I used to get the English version as well (out of interest in translations). I will use the library whenever possible for these... I am preparing to thin out the bookshelves right now of books I find no longer of interest. They will go to some charity book sale. More books need a home.
