I enjoy the image of you sneaking off to buy books. Do you get in trouble if the wife finds out? Do you hide books behind the toilet? Does your wife wonder what you're doing in there for so long? Has she ever said, "If you buy another damned book, so help me...."
Those Everyman editions are pretty nice - not too pricey for hardcovers. I don't have many though. I picked up one at Hudson's Salvage for three dollars the other day - The Custom of the Country.
The only book I've read in both the P/V and another translation is Anna Karenina, and I didn't think it made much difference. My impression is that their real contribution is to Dostoievski. I've replaced my C&P. I've not yet read The Brothers K, so I will get the P/V translation of that. I'm not going to bother replacing my copy of The Idiot. I'd like to read their version of Notes from the Underground, but I really like my Jane Kentish version however good or bad it may be, so I'm not going to replace it.
I think I'm going to go with the Guerney translation of Dead Souls and the Burgin/Tiernan O'Connor translation of The Master and Margarita, but I'm still researching the latter.
