I read it last year and agree that it was very memorable. The story was crafted like a spiral moving back and forth in time and place, but drawing ever closer to the central event which was the death of Sophie Mol.
The incest at the end did come as a surprise, but I wasn't offended by it. It was like a person turning inward upon himself after a traumatic event, except that this was two halves of a closely bonded pair turning towards themselves when they had nowhere else to go.

: I read it a few years ago and the memory is vague on
: details. I do recall though that I liked the book a
: lot. As you say, very skillful and poetic writing.

: I finished this book today. Very good book. Very
: skillful, very poetic writing. In fact, the whole book
: was like a poem in prose.
:
: Very merciless. There are people like Baby Kochamma, I
: am not at all surprised by her behaviour.
:
: The twins incest was hard to take. Initially, the
: social wiring in me made me think that Rahel and
: Estha's crime was bigger than the crimes of India,
: crimes of the police and the crimes of the
: dysfunctional family. But after thinking about it for
: a while, I realized that these two marginalized and
: tormented children did nothing worse than what the
: system or what their family did.
:
: It was a sad story. beautifully written.
