Among other themes, it seems to me that there is Father (imagination, irrationality, madness, art) vs. Adela (pragmatic, unimaginative, sane). Of course, disorderly, insane Father desires and lusts after orderly, sane Adela. Not to mention that the servant seems to hold the real authority.
These are still half-formed ideas, but I do think that there is more going on than mere dreams. (Although the book is an exceptional evocation of the dream state.)
