Since I'm new around here, I don't know how things proceed. In the list that Steven posted, The Street of Crocodiles and Home of the Gentry were listed for March. And since March is almost over...
I read The Street of Crocodiles and found it to be quite special. The blurb on the front of my copy from I. B. Singer compares it to both Kafka and Proust. (Two more different writers I can hardly imagine.) I can see why the comparison, although I found it much closer to Kafka. Yet there are passages of great warmth amid the grotesque and nightmarish sequences. (Not that Proust is exactly warm.) Comparisons to Garcia Marquez come to mind as well.
I found this book to be more genuinely dream-like than any other work I can think of.
Thoughts?
