I was also grateful of such medications up until this experience. Normally, the pain killer works for 3-3.5 hours and you are told not to take it before 4 hours, so you do experience the pain for one fourth of the time but you have relief otherwise.
This time, we changed pain killers three times and nothing worked. I never really got a break.
This got me thinking of cancer patients. We hear that their pain is usually not alleviated by anything.
In The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann tells us that people get used to the pain. I am not sure if that's true. My experience was to have reduced tolerance as time passed on. Your patience runs out, you become weary of the suffering... I found myself complaining of lesser and lesser pain as days went by.
