though the book no longer reaches its readership, it still exists, which prompts the further action of exiling the author.
I had an English professor who used to talk about an idea that a book really only exists when being read. I think it's a structuralist ideal. Of course the paper and ink always exist, but the book, the message (I hate to use that word of a book, but it seems to make things clearer in this case.) only exists when someone is reading it.
So, philosophically speaking, I think the pain still exists because it continues to motivate you to take action even while it isn't being felt.
That's an interesting point, but I would say that what exists in that case is the idea of pain.
