: Was your choice of Turgenev for your example a hint
: nudging us toward a discussion of Home of the Gentry?
Sort of, but I didn't mention it because I actually haven't finished it myself. I was out of town (and internet-less) for a week and took Home of the Gentry on my ebook reader. But for some reason (probably because I had unplugged it from the PC too soon) the reader software locked up and wouldn't work until I got back home and re-connected it to my PC. Fortunately I had plenty of other books with me in hardcopy, including A Sportsman's Notebook, from which I read the first several stories.
I should be finished and ready to discuss in a day or two.
I'm reading the Constance Garnett translation, not because it's the best but because it was a free ebook. Other translations are titled A Nest of Gentlefolk, which I'm sure is a more appropriate translation of the title. I've read several of Turgenev's shorter works recently, and being an avid hunter he uses nest and bird metaphors regularly.
