Lale, I essentailly agree with joffre. Here's my view:
Pain is an alarm system. Some injury or damage occurs in our body. This news is conveyed to our brains, which light up with alarm and trigger the experience of pain. Pain is not the injury, but an alarm system to inform us that a problem (injury, trauma, whatever) has occurred.
Allow me an analogy. Suppose you have one of those silent alarm systems in your house. When an intruder enters, the system is activated. Nothing obvious happes at the house, but the information is conveyed to Security Central, where all kinds of bells, whistles, and lights go off. The police are dispatched. If the alarm is turned off, there is still an invasion of your home, but no message is sent to the Security people.
Similarly, if the pain pills turn the pain signal off, then no message is sent to your brain, and no pain exists. Of course, the physiological problem that would trigger pain in the absence of the medication continues to exist.
