Clearly those are good pain pills. 
I would say that the pain is gone, that it doesn't exist. I think the pain is the feeling caused by damage to the nerves. The pain killer puts the nerves to sleep, so they don't feel. When they begin to wake up, they feel again, and as there is some damage, they feel pain.
