Joffre, I'm happy you enjoyed Mr. Biswas. I learned so much about my own history from that book, so it has always been in my top 5. But because of this, I often wonder if my view of it is biased as a result. Given the number of other people who love it, though, particularly people like you who are accomplised readers, I feel sure now that my view of it isn't skewed, that it is, indeed, a very good book any way you cut it.
City of Djinns--I'm even happier you read and enjoyed this, mostly because it has so few readers, relative to Biswas, and because you are the first I've actually helped convince to read it! I was just thinking the other day that it's time I reread it.

: I've just finished A House for Mr. Biswas , and I
: really enjoyed it. It's rare that I read a book of
: anything close to that length without ever feeling
: tired of it. Every morning, I woke up feeling
: interested in Mohun's trials with the crab catchers. I
: thought I remembered someone having listed the book
: among their favorites and looked back and found that
: both Lale and Rizwan did and that Steven found it
: disappointing.

: This is the first of Naipal's novels I've read. I've
: enjoyed three of his travel books: the first two
: volumes of his trilogy on India (I hope the third will
: be back in print soon.) and A Turn in the South . I
: thought it was very cool that such a respected writer
: had written a travel book about my area of the U.S.
:
: By the way, Rizwan, I read City of Djinns which I
: learned of from your list, and I enjoyed it very much.
: It made me want more than ever to see some of India.
