In any case, I second Steven's assessment: no harm in skipping TSOP. For one thing (and maybe this is unfair), it pales in comparison to Gatsby. Also, I think in order to fully appreciate it, you "kinda had to be there," as it were, when the book first was published. What people then mistook as a modernist masterpiece today just seems like a dated hack job, with evidence of Fitzgerald's hasty cutting and pasting everywhere, overshadowing the undeniable lyrical brilliance of several passages. Maybe this is being a little too unkind, but to me the book was interesting only in terms of tracking Fitzgerald's development as a writer, and not as a work of art in and of itself. Many say this is the very best book ever written pertaining to university life, but I just don't see it.
