Yes, I liked it very much as well. It reminds me a lot of Buddenbrooks, and also of The Makioka Sisters.
I kept in mind what Lale said earlier about how Turkish is a language rich in idiom that makes it difficult to translate. I assume that Arabic is the same way, and that much of what is idiomatic in Arabic was translated into simile and metaphor in the English version - the text is unusually rich in these devices.
