Hey guys,
Guillermo: you may be able to find "Fifth Business" as the first part of "The Deptford Trilogy." I know that Penguin publishes "Fifth Business" separately, but in the bookstores I frequent, it's more often found as part of the trilogy. In any case, do whatever you can to find it: it's a brilliant book and very much worth your while.
Lale: I'm happy you're enjoying "Fifth Business!" Who knew that an innocent snowball could exact such profound effects on the lives of so many for years afterward?
Regarding "This Side of Paradise," I actually started it yesterday and should be finished with it by this weekend. Sorry for the delay--I am up to the war interlude. So far it is good, though a bit choppy. I understand that critics appreciated this choppiness when it was first released, thinking Fitzgerald was some kind of avant garde artist, when in reality he was desperate to get the thing done as fast as possible (in order to impress the girl he was in love with, Zelda) and just pieced together all the bits of writing he hand on hand and tried to force it into a coherent narrative! How successful he was at this is debatable (though he did end up marrying Zelda), but there's no question that the man could write a beautiful sentence!
In the meantime, Guillermo, feel free to post your thoughts on the book and I will try to respond. Don't worry about giving away the ending.

: Well, I have "The Chess Story" and I'm ready
: to read it in December. I could never find "Fifth
: Business", so I will have to skip that. And by
: the way, did anybody read our October assignment,
: "This Side of Paradise". I did and am ready
: to discuss it if there's someone else.

: I thought "The Chess Story" was long
: overdue.
: I was feeling guilty, yet again, for not having read a
: book of the current or the past month. So a few nights
: ago when I gave a break to my W&P, I picked up Zweig's
: book, so small and so different than what I was
: reading.
:
: When nobody replied to my posting, it occured to me to
: go to the "book club" page of my own site
: and look at the schedule. And I saw that it was
: December's book.
:
: That's how badly I have been out of touch.
:
: No wonder nobody replied.
:
: Now, I am reading the Fifth Business. A lot of fun!
: I'll be ready to discuss it by the end of the month.
