  • Topic of conversation

I can't decide which is more fun; following endurance racing at the circuits, or reading about the trials and tribulations of Phase One on Race24. If P1 got as much coverage in the national bike press as they do on this forum, they'd probably have more sponsors than they could deal with. Which brings us to the question; If Phase One finish this year, just what are we all going to rant and rave about next year? Without endurance racings favourite martyrs, there'll be nothing to discuss, and Race24 will become a ghost forum. Quick, lets start a 'Save Phase One - Save Race24' campaign.

Yamaha Phase One team manager Russell Benney was both extremely pleased and relieved, he explains; “2009 has been a difficult year, both on and off the track - fifth in Spain and 12th at Suzuka is creditable but we need to do better. The un-planned limitations to the budget meant that we could no longer offer Damian and Alex (Cudlin) the package we had agreed for Qatar and were forced to drop them. That was one of my most difficult times. I feared that it would be impossible to fulfil our ambitions for the race but I was relieved when I found just how many riders wanted to do it. The timing of the race is perfect to showcase their talents. It is lovely to know that riders such as Ellison and Richards haven’t forgotten their good times with the team and are out for more of that success.”

Perhaps Ellison and Richards are willing to go to Qatar on expenses only! Perhaps they are in a position where the money is not so important. It is closed season and perhaps they just want to ride a bike. Perhaps they are happy to help P1 out whilst the money is short. I think perhaps Damo needed the money where perhaps James and Glen don't, sorry but maybe this is the way of the world. I like all the others think Damo and Alex are great guys and both ride the pretty good, but moneys money and if you ain't got you ain;t got it.

I've heard a roumor that the Japanese Government want all forms of motor sport involving japanese companies stopped due to the current financial climate. That in theory would mean (in the main)only Aprilia BMW and Ducati competing in motorcycle racing around the world. In Formula 1 all the teams have now gone, Bridgstone have said they will not be re-newing their tyre contract after the 2010 season. Can you imagine no Yamaha, no Honda, no Kawasaki and no Suzuki in The WEC, unless the money to run the teams was totally privately gained. MOTO GP 'no teams' etc etc etc

No Japanese teams? it'd be just like the 1950's (but preferably without the oil leaks). The British motorcycle industry could rule the racing world again..............well, OK, Triumph could take on the Europeans, with the odd Harely thrown in for good measure, and maybe the Chinese could be the new Japanese?

As Russell sort of points out in his press release there are a lot more factors with a November race - there were a whole load of perfectly good contenders for the ride and it was a really hard job picking the ones finally chosen. Timmo might be surprised by the way things have turned out but I can assure him he'd be even more surprised if he knew some of the other names in the frame! Even after the last couple of years I do not think it had really sunk in with the team how much (and how many!) riders would want to do this race in the off season.
Perhaps all riders and managers should learn a lesson from the entire sorry episode and think very carefully about their negotiating position for the Qatar race next year in relation to the rest of the year! Everything has changed for this race and I think all parties would be well advised to bear this in mind when making contracts at the start of the year. Without telling any particular riders or managers how to do their jobs it would seem to me that a contract for 5 well paid rides with an option for the last ride at a much reduced rate would probably form a good starting point for some teams. This would give the manager flexibility to try someone new while at the same time removing the financial incentive to do so and the somewhat unrealistic expectation of a big pay packet at this race in the face of the harsh realities of supply/demand/budget!

But then, maybe I'm not the first person to think of that!

Amen to Adrian's plea for someone to step up with the cash to keep the P1 soap opera on the road as well! How about a 'fly on the wall' documentary maker - there's so much that goes on that never even makes it onto here. It must be so boring working for a professional team!
