Race24 Home -> Race24 Message Board- Phase One trailing in Spain!

During secret rider testing in Spain Denise fell off more than 10 times and earned herself the nickname 'the new James Haydon'! She even fell off the Husky trying to bump start it on tarmac! Still, everyone had a great time and the serious list of potential riders for Qatar was whittled away... a couple of bruises were suffered, a wheel bearing collapsed and a brake fell to bits... much wine was quaffed! But here's what the P1 people who saw us doing the preparation but did not go are no doubt dying to know, possibly even more than who will be on the P1 bike in Qatar! The KMX200 had a few minor teething problems (fuel contamination, shot seal on left fork, gear lever splines worn, exhaust hanger snapped, lost tail pipe up a mountain, key bounced out and lost in a river bed, broken clutch lever, worn out clutch cable stretched till no adjustment left, refusing to idle, falling in a river (with Denise under it!), speedo not working, ignition light failing, oil light failing, tail light failing, brake light failing, failing to have a mirror (105 Euro fine!), massive wobble on front sprocket, chain stretching like a rubber band, flat tyre, petrol tap letting reserve fuel out on normal position, tank mounting failure, boiled over every time it was thrashed up more than a couple of hundred meters altitude in first/second gear, exhaust gasket severe leak, general lack of top end power)....but survived to complete a full final day up to the snow line and back despite the horrific punishment Denise gave it (Unlike some vastly more expensive KTMs)! Brilliant fun, she says, and worth every one of the the 377 pounds it cost! If it had an electric start she would keep it! If anyone wants to see the beast in question it's here:- http://www.mikesendurance.com/09_UPrep.html It's now for sale and any offer better than "I'll throw it into a ravine for you on the way home" considered! Ben, you should get off the fence and say what you really think rather than keeping it all bottled up!

Damn, sounds like more fun than riding your bicycle like last year. I wanted to go to Spain again but when we asked Russell he said he wasn't going this year:/ Did you get any good pics then And did you got to the jumps down in the riverbed Mike? We got some good air there last year on the motorbikes.

Is this Phase One who spent a week trail riding in Spain any relation to the Phase One that has run out of any available cash as noted in Ben's post. Good to see the team gettings its priorities correct.

you would be right in thinking this is the same P1 team, However like all of us we are entitled to holidays and no funds came from the team ! Oh by the way I did not go.

Anon, As a rough guide RB organises and the people who go pay for most of it - but still get the most amazing value holiday as anyone who's ever been on the annual Phase One jolly will testify! It's all personal as it's a holiday anyway so nothing to do with the race team budget as Age says. Not that the entire thing would cover the rider budget I imagine! Martin, despite falling off 3 times as opposed to zero on the pedal bike it was indeed a hell of a lot less painful! It was a bit of a last minute decision to go I think and the places went almost immediately. Actually - that makes me wonder if maybe it was nearly chopped due to budget reasons after all! It was brilliant anyway and Denise and I will certainly be on the list to go if it happens again next year! Statistics: Any bike beginning with H (Honda, Husky) will not break down at all! Any bike beginning with K (Kawasaki) will suffer lots of minor niggles and crash damage but never fail to finish. Any bike beginning with K (KTM) will suffer a failure which will require a limp home for repairs which in 50% of cases will mean it's out for the rest of the holiday! It doesn't matter what letter your bike starts with - it will still be fined E105 for not having a mirror fitted while pootling through town to top up with petrol! I guess it means that British traffic wardens are not the only ones to be given quotas to fill! A pregnant woman told me she had been given a parking ticket despite being sat in her car at the time! There's lies, damned lies, statistics and very, very bored Spanish traffic cops! Anyone who has been to Ainsa and seen it's horrendous traffic problems first hand will realise just how bored they must be! It must be exceptionally difficult to justify their existance as there is virtually no traffic at all!

I remember the Pedestrians in Ainsa being a bit suicidal last year with 1 old lady almost getting run over by me. You got fined for not having mirrors? Neither of my bikes in UK have mirrors and they both passed MOTs like that. I would have loved to come, maybe next year... Entering a 3 hour enduro race on Salisbury plain on my bike in 3 weeks instead though, inspired by my crazy father doing the same... Anything he can do i can do better? I'll be giving it a try:)

3-hour enduro eh Martin? Best try to avoid riding into your old man when he's stationary and blaming him for it this time eh? ;-) Have fun, let us know how you get on.... Mike, did you send your appeal against the €105 fine like Justin and I did? It'll be a bonus if it works, we lose nothing by trying, we'll let you know what happens... as the copper said, next time just carry a mirror in the rucksack - or get some clip-on ones like Hal found on fleabay. As for Anon and your little dig about funds - matches the size of your dick you spineless tosser, tell us all your name. We all paid our own way for the trip and it was excellent, book me in for next year :-)

Hi Scotty, yes we did - and all in Spanish courtesy of one of Denise's multi-cultural co-workers! She also looked through the Spanish website on such matters and found the correct address etc. No news yet! Denise says thanks for helping her when she fell off - although she doesn't say which fall off she is talking about!
