If you have any interest in assistive technology (AT), you must attend a session with Linda Burkhart! Linda is the queen of cheap low-tech! She can take commonplace items (things that you and I wouldn't give a second glance) from dollar stores, yard sales, and flea markets, and turn them into ingenious adaptive equipment for students with disabilities. Linda has published "how-to" books and articles on AT, available from her web site (see speakingofspeech.com, Links & Resources, AAC and Assistive Technology), and she speaks at conferences all over the country. If she is not already scheduled to present near you, you can arrange to have her do a "make and take" session for your staff or consortium. You will be amazed by her creativity, enthusiasm, and wonderfully simplistic view of an area that many find overwhelming. I've seen Linda's presentations on several occasions. She never fails to recharge my batteries!
