The time has come to announce this year's ACES: Augmentative Communication and Empowerment Supports. This year's ACES will be from July 15-26, 2002. This will be our 15th year of ACES.
ACES consists of two weeks of intensive instruction at Temple University's main campus, one year of monthly follow-up instructional sessions, and ongoing technical support.
Instruction by staff with experience and expertise in the use of voice output communication devices. Communication instruction will cover topics such as customizing your communication device, storage and retrieval of vocabulary, public speaking skills, rate enhancement, and functional use of your communication device within your environment.
Computer instruction will cover such topics as interfacing your communication device with any computer, backing up and transferring memory, using word processing, email, and the Internet.
Empowerment classes covering topics such as independent living, personal assistance, employment, transportation, the Americans with Disabilities Act, self-defense, and personal future planning - all taught by people from the disability community.
Community Building for people with disabilities, particularly augmentative communicators. Opportunities to share knowledge and experiences with experienced, skilled users of augmentative communication who can act as role models and mentors.
ACES also offers the opportunity to experience life on a college campus and live independently for two weeks.
ACES will be lots of hard work and fun.
Adults with significant speech disabilities who want to learn to use voice output communication systems to enhance their communication, as well as friends, families, students, and professionals who support people with significant speech disabilities. Participants attend ACES with one member of their support team, who also receives training.
