Posted by Susan G. Pearl on September 26, 2005, 6:38 pm, in reply to "death record" Death certificates did not exist in the Maryland counties until 1898 (1875 in Baltimore), so I cannot help you with that. You have to rely on family or church records, or newspaper obituaries. You probably already have Mary Carroll's obituary in the 4 January 1864 "Washington Evening Star," but here it is: "Died on the 3rd instant [3 January 1864] at the Long Old Fields, PGC, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. George Phelps, Mrs. Mary Carroll in the 71st year of her age and a native of the County South Ireland, but for the past 20 years a resident of this city [i.e., Washington]. Her funeral service will take place from St. Patrick's Church on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. [5 January 1864]" Long Old Fields was the area that is now called Forestville in Prince George's County. George Phelps does not appear in either the 1860 or the 1870 census in Long Old Fields, so he must have lived there for only a short time. Also, I can tell you that there is no marriage record for George Phelps in Prince George's County; perhaps his marriage to Mary Carroll's daughter took place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in D.C. You may be able to get some information not only on Mary Carroll's funeral, but on the Phelps marriage from St. Patrick's (619 Tenth St. NW Good Luck with your search! Susan G. Pearl, Historian
