Posted by Susan G. Pearl, historian on November 20, 2004, 3:20 pm, in reply to "Re: A Few Houses" Elverton Hall, the ca. 1800 brick home of the Hill family, was located on the east side of Church Road, about 1/2 mile north of present-day U.S. 50. It was demolished in 1952, before Prince George's county had a preservation ordinance. Essington was a completely different place, a wood frame house of approximately the same age, home of the Peach family. Essington was destroyed in 1971 (also before the ordinance of 1981) when the Levitt Corporation began extending the Belair subdivision south. The area where Essington stood is now part of the South Bowie residential development. Don't hesitate to send any more questions. Or even better, visit the Historical Society library at Marietta, 5626 Bell Station Road in Glenn Dale. The library is staffed on Saturday afternoons, noon to 4 p.m. Our Holiday party, at Marietta, will be 2-5 on Saturday, 11 December - there will be music and food upstairs in the historic house, and the library will be open downstairs, and you are welcome to come!
