Prince George's is the only place I've ever lived where I considered myself to be an actual member of a community (I owned a home in Camp Springs for 17 years.) That's why I'm posting my comments to this board, rather than to, say, the historical society of Sacramento. I drive through the county - my county - look at maps, read documents and see names like Patuxent, Accokeek, etc., and it makes me wonder, "Who were those people, and what happened to them?" Where else to search look for answers than with the county's own historical society. I'm sure other historical societies, in other parts of the country are in the same boat - their history starts with Miles Standish, the Mayflower, and so forth, as if there didn't exist a time before that. -ag

I didn't mean to chide anyone in particular. My post was meant to provoke some deeper thoughts on a matter that relates to the history of this region. Historians have been negligent in their characterization of the native population that inhabited the Americas before the colonial era. I grew up reading history texts that glorified the doctrine of "Manifest Destiny", and the "great" push westward, without any mention of the people we pushed out. Even the Declaration of Independence refers to the indigenous population as "merciless Indian savages".
