Posted by Susan G. Pearl, Historian on August 12, 2006, 3:13 pm, in reply to "County Cavan Rileys" Eliphas' will (1760) is on file at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis - Liber #1, folio 517. I hope that you can come to the library - we are open every Saturday from noon to 4:00 p.m., and can be reached there during those hours at 301-464-0590. Hugh Riley, and the many properties that he acquired (Riley's Discovery, Riley's Folly, Riley's Horse Pasture, Riley's Range, Riley's Lott) appear frequently in deeds of the early 18th century. The above-cited tracts are located in the northeast section of the County, in the vicinity of present-day Bowie. If you can come to our library (at Marietta, 5626 Bell Station Road, Glenn Dale, MD), you can spend lots of time looking them up in the Land Records abstracts that we have here, as well as court records. Eliphas (sometimes spelled Eliphar), appears also; in 1750 he applied for a license to keep an "ordinary" (tavern) in his home on the Eastern Branch - I have not found any confirmation about whether the license was granted or whether he did indeed operate the ordinary.
