Capt. Pumphrey

It is understood in family history that some children who went by the surname of Griffith in Prince George's county, Maryland are the descendants of a Capt. Pumphrey. He was most likely born some time between 1790's to 1830's.
Has anyone ever heard of this gentleman ?
