Hi,
As soon as you land you are eligible under the provincial health system and you can usually get your cards in a few days. The HRDC offices in most cities will assist you in this matter. So you won't need health insurance for most medical matters. You can buy suplemental through Blue Cross or such if you wish for dental and some prescription drugs. You will do well to bring your vehicle insurance record with you otherwise they see you as a new driver. Saved me $3000 per year.
I am on the other coast so can't help you much as far as BC is concerned but feel free to ask. My wife worked as immigrant settlement worker here for a while so we may dig up information you need.
