Dear Mr Pevar,
I live in Bristol, England, where I am a skint and unknown musician and painter. Being poor I can never get to America to see the music I love being played live. Being unknown I have no direct way of contacting those people whose music inspired me as a teenager to write songs; who gave me a few ideas as to what a song could aspire to being, who introduced me to new musical soundscapes - and who changed some of the ways I looked at life.
Whether this was a good thing or not, i don't know - I can only assume that it hasn't been a bad thing.
I do know, however, that the music I make is deeply in debt to Crosby, Stills and Nash.
I also know that I have no way of repaying that debt, and, frustratingly, no way of directly thanking them.
Lastly, I know that as I continue to mature as an artist that I have to grow beyond their influence in order to take full possession of my own gifts and develop my own voice/ vision.
Because of this I feel it is right/necessary to acknowledge these debts, so: Thank you Mr Crosby, Mr Stills and Mr Nash. Thank you Mr Pevar for the guitar work on "Just Like Gravity" - which is a great album. (It's a pity that CPR have not taken those ideas further.) None of you can be aware that you have affected and moved me, and probably several million others, very deeply.
I hope that you are well, all things are good, and that your music continues to inspire people.
Yours Sincerely,
Ian Perry.
