The vets were in action last night in the 1st round of the Oxfordshire County Cup away to last years finalists, Bampton Town.
Bampton gave us a real tough game last night with us just scraping home by the odd goal from 5.
Bampton took the lead against the run of play midway through the first half with a well worked goal. City responded almost immediately with a fine header from Julio Barresi from Justin Lee's cross.
HALF-TIME: Bampton Town 1 Oxford City 1
City took the lead midway through the 2nd half from the penaly spot, as the ref spotted a push on Andy Marriott. Julio Barresi sending the keeper the wrong way for his second of the match. It only took Bampton 2 minutes to respond after City's defence were caught square and it was game on again. The game swung from end to end, and Bampton's Daryl Kew was causing City a lot of problems, as was City's Paul Spittle to Bampton, who was pulling the strings in the centre of midfield. The winner came with 5 minutes remaining, substitue Dave Southam scoring from close range from a resulting corner for his first goal for City, since joining from Kidlington.
Credit to Bampton Town for really giving us a game last night and for the nice hot cup of Tea at Half-Time.
Next round we are away to Chippy Old Boys, much to the delight of the lads, who always look forward to a night out at the Kings Arms in Woodstock on the way home.
FINAL SCORE: Bampton Town 2 Oxford City 3
Team last night: Fleet, Carroll, Lee, Marriott, Tutton, Smith, Spittle, Fontaine, Orlando, Rodney, Barresi. Subs: Pagano, Southam, Williams, Holden(not used), Smy(not used).
Man of the Match: Paul Spittle
After last night's performance, I'm taking a few of the squad on a spa weekend to Dublin this weekend. Hopefully we will see an improvement next week, when we play Ducklington, Away (at Witey United FC).
