As Paul has stated, a very creditable draw. I'm absolutely delighted with the performance last night. All 14 players who were involved last night put in a fantastic performance. We knew that Wantage were going to be physically strong and fit, and if we could match them in that department, then we would have a real chance. Although we had more clear cut chances over the full 80 mins, a draw was probably a fair result. I was pleased with the way all the new boys fitted in to the system. Steve Tavinor at the back was awesome, and looks to have formed a great partnership with Andy Marriott at the centre of defence, although he needs to practice his "Eduardo dives" for next week if he wants to win a free-kick. The player actually needs to be at least a couple of yards away from you Tav if you are going to con the ref??? Another major plus was having Paul Spittle in the team. Him and Caffer ran the show in the centre of midfield last night. The only down side of having Spits in the side is having to listen to him moaning all night because he has to pay £5 subs, made worse last night, when he got into the club house too late, and all the sausage and chips had been eaten!!!
Dave Southam also settled in well at front, and looked very sharp. We had a complete new pairing up front last night with Phil Lynch also making his debut partnering Southy up front.
Although I don't like to single out individuals, because last night was just a great team performance, I would like to give a mention to Simon Pagano, who had to fill in for Colin Fleet between the sticks. Although he didn't have too many shots to save all night, he was bombarded from corners and Andy Cooper throw-ins, on numerous occassions, and on every occassion, dealt with everything that came his way. His distribution was also fantastic.
Delighted with the reaction when we went a goal down midway through the 1st half, and the lads didn't let their heads dropped, and we were rewarded wihin 5 mins of going behind. Liam Carroll & Chris Fontaine linked well down the right hand side and put Dave Southam through, who in turn put a perfect ball across to Jason Caffel, who finished with a delicate chip over the Wantage keeper. Just like watching Brazil??? I don't mean Alan Brazil, Liam!!!
A big thanks to all the lads last night for putting in a big performance.
Thanks also to Smyler for running the line in the first half and Phil in the 2nd half.
Man of the Match: Simon Pagano
Next game next Wednesday at home to Chinnor, Kick off 7.45PM.
