: Hellenic Floodlit Cup
: Tuesday 8th September 2009
:
: Reading Town (1) 3
: Oxford City Nomads (0) 1
:
: There can be no complaints from Nomads as
: the better team beat them on the night.
: Nomads’ much changed side had no real answer
: to Town’s strong and accomplished
: performance.
:
: Nomads fielded a much-changed side with Mark
: Jones taking the opportunity to look at
: several players who had not featured so far.
: This meant that there were four debutants
: and several positional changes. The recast
: defence struggled to cope early on but
: Town’s wayward shooting meant that the
: Nomads goal was not seriously threatened.
:
: Although Town had more of the pressure, the
: first clear-cut chance fell to Nomads, as
: Mark Janes was sent through after a crisp
: passing move, but Town’s keeper Grace came
: out smartly to save.
:
: Reading took the lead just before half-time.
: Lenny Sackey appeared to be chopped down
: just inside the opposition half; the referee
: seemed to be playing advantage even though
: Reading had the ball. Clark broke away and,
: although Duane Wiley saved well, Clark
: squared the rebound for Lewis to score.
:
: Just before the hour mark, Reading increased
: their lead. A free-kick was awarded for a
: seemingly innocuous challenge just outside
: the area despite the referee being a good 60
: yards from the incident. Indecision and
: confusion reigned as the officials did not
: seem to know what to do and Nomads took an
: age to form a wall. Parfitt did not let this
: affect him as he stroked home the free kick.
:
: It was not clear whether Joel Meade had been
: booked before the goal. This became
: significant as he was shown the red card ten
: minutes later, either for a second bookable
: offence or for a straight red – either way
: the challenge was nowhere near as bad as
: several others in the game. Mark Jones was
: sent from the dugout in the ensuing
: confusion.
:
: By this stage the game was over – Town had
: gone three up through Lewis two minutes
: before – but ten-man Nomads then produced
: their best spell of the match. Denel Thomas,
: impressive as sub, scored with a well-placed
: shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, and
: Nomads could have added a second.
:
: There were quite a few plus points in this
: display, most notably in that Nomads’ heads
: never went down. It is tiresome to have to
: criticise officials, but when they do not
: seem to know what is going on, it is
: difficult to see how anyone else can.
:
: Team: Wiley – Knight, Nagy, Meade (c), Rixon
: – L Sackey (D Thomas 67), Morris, M Sackey,
: Forbes – J Thomas (Harris 90), Janes
: (Barcelos ht)
