The boys finished the season with a 4-0 win away to 2nd placed Chinnor, meaning that we have gone through the whole season with a 100% win record. Chinnor's squad included ex Thame Boys Richard Carr & Denis Gascoyne, who had got a flight back in his private jet after running the New York Marathon in a gorilla suit only 24 hours before. That's commitment for you. Also good to see my old mate, Leigh Bloomfield on the bench. He asked me not to mention his penalty miss, that cost Chinnor over 40's a final place??? So I won't.
The first half was a niggly affair with both sets of players getting involved in over the top chalenges and handbags at 2 paces. Who says you get calmer the older you get???
Fleety kept City in the game with a couple of vital saves. Marco had to change from his flip flops after 10 minutes, after falling over with no-one around him. Rodders broke the vets league record of getting booked after only 10 seconds of coming on as sub. The challenge was so late, it was into tomorrow. Liam joined him into the note book with a tackle that said, "Thank god we've got a few month's break, roll on the Summer". While this was all going on Denis & Bradders were arguing over who was the best looking. Denis won this hands down as he stated that he does not dye his hair yet? Julio scored the only goal of the 1st half, when shooting into an empty net from 30 yards, after a goalkeeping error. Why couldn't that have fell to me??? We all went in at half time for a cold shower to calm us all down.
Creedy changed the formation round for the second half, and it paid dividends with City going back to there football that they have been playing all season. 10 minutes into the 2nd half & Marco swanned in, like he swanned out of the Chequers pub on Sunday, to lift the ball over the keeper and put us 2 up. Then 2 more were added in the last 10 minutes one from Julian Dark after an unselfish pass from myself. Why did I do that? Julio - TAKE NOTE. Clarkey got the last with an excellent free kick that sailed into the top corner. I'm sure I got a touch on it before it went in???
Carr'y upset our travelling Shed Army by going through the back of Julio in the dying minutes. I had nothing to do with it, Jules? The cheque is in the post Carr'y.
FINAL SCORE 4-0, and Jules done me for the league's top goalscorer. Well done mate.
Creedy shed a tear in the changing room after the game, going around saying his farewells to each member of the squad.
Myself and Julian Dark will be taking over next season. How can we compete with Creedy's record. We will give it our best shot, but we've got to keep this going. There will be changes for next season. Players will have to be released in the summer. Players will be added to the squad in certain positions to keep a few of you on your toes. Some players have also been given a weight target to reach by the start of next season or they also will be OUT. You know who you are, lads??? Bradders needs to put weight on, and get a few more wrinkles, as he is looking out of place in the team.
A couple of beers (I'm still waiting, Denis) in the bar and the usual banter, and it was off home for a horlicks and a well earned rest. Marco went straight off to Homebase to spend his vouchers that he got on Sunday night. Me, Bradders & Liam went for a late beer in the Chequers, and saw a picture of Creedy on the pubwatch notice board. Creedy went home to spend some much earned family time.
Thanks to all the committee who have supported us all this season & also to the SHED ARMY, who have followed us all season. Sorry, don't know all your names, but you know who you are.
Team last night: Fleet, Carroll, Dark, Jennings, O'Hara, Bowley, Bradbury, R Barresi, Orlando, Holden, J Baressi. Subs: Clarke, Smy, Rodney.
See you all next season, when we get another year older.
