Posted by Claire on October 19, 2007, 8:06 am, in reply to "FA Youth Cup" City made it through to the next round of the FA Cup after a close match against a powerful Buckingham Town side, in a game switched to Court Place Farm stadium owing to a flooded pitch at Buckingham. City nearly took a shock lead in the second minute when Mark Bell, spotting the keeper off his line, lobbed narrowly wide from all of 50 yards. City did manage to go ahead ten minutes after when Jon Gotch ran from the half-way line and finished coolly from ten yards. Town were back on terms within two minutes when slack marking allowed Kyle Stimpson a free header at a corner. For the rest of the first half City dominated possession but struggled to find the final ball, while Town always looked dangerous on the break. City went back ahead six minutes before the break when Andrew Smith was brought down in the penalty area; Bell’s penalty was well saved by Town’s excellent goalkeeper but he reacted quickly to drill home the rebound. The second half started scrappily and City struggled to put together any moves of note. Town were dominant in midfield but failed to put Alex Williams in the City goal under real pressure. City attacks were at a premium in the second period, but it took an excellent tackle to deny Gotch a carbon copy of his goal, and only an excellent save stopped Corey Forbes from making the game safe in the dying minutes. City rode their luck at times in this game, but they can play better and must take credit for a battling performance. The most important thing is that City are still in the Cup. Team: Alex Williams (capt) – Padraic Folan, Kallum Conlon, Simon Reeves (sub Rhys Denton 69 min), Lewis Colwell – Mark Bell, Lawrence El Kassir, Tom Holmes, Andrew Smith (sub Kyle Harris 87 min) – Jon Gotch (sub Richard Norris 75 min), Corey Forbes. Unused subs: Zac Lafford, Richard Higgs.
