Posted by Robin Russell on May 5, 2007, 8:23 pm Under 10s Five Under-10 teams gathered for the eagerly anticipated Oxford City seven-a-side tournament. The pitches were understandably hard given the recent weather; but the tournament started on a rather chilly grey Saturday morning. Stuart took charge of the A Team and Roger the B Team and there was ample opportunity to warm up before the tournament opened with the Colts’ A Team taking on Summertown. The seven minute format allowed little time for the boys to settle and create chances and so it was not surprising that the first match, and indeed the second between Florence Park and Horspath, ended goalless. The B Team’s first match was a tight affair against Florence Park in which the Colts played excellent football; but again neither side were able to find the net. The A Team were then unlucky to loose 1-0 to a strong Horspath side. After a slow start, during which they conceded an early goal, the boys lifted the game and were unfortunate not to equalise. In the following game the B Team lifted local spirits by beating Summertown 1-0 with a goal from Tyler Walker. He pounced on weak goal kick and riffled the ball into the bottom corner of the net. During the remainder of the first half of the group stage matches remained tight, finishing in either a goalless draw or a narrow 1-0 victory. In the match between the two Colts’ sides neither side were able to gain the upper hand and the teams fought out a competitive 0-0 draw. With the sun now shining and the temperature rising, the group stage continued with return matches against each side. The A Team dominated against Summertown and won through a well-taken goal scored by Daniel Dennis who had an excellent tournament. The B Team were again unable to score against Florence Park in another goalless draw but, like the A Team, they beat Summertown 1-0, with a goal from Daniel Keen. In the second A versus B Team clash, the B Team just had the edge winning through another Tyler Walker goal. Qualification for the final therefore came down to the last two matches. To get through, the B Team, who were playing Horspath, had to do better the Florence Park, who interestingly were up against the A Team. The A Team held Florence Park to a goalless draw but unfortunately the B Team were unable to score against Horspath despite having the majority of the game and the better goal scoring opportunities. In the end Florence Park went through to face Horspath in the final but this was only on goals scored, as points and goal difference were identical to the Colts’ B Team. Despite their dominance in the group, Horspath surprisingly failed to win the final. Although they had the majority of the possession, Horspath failed to score with Florence Park finding the net on one of their few attacks. But goals win games, and tournaments, and so Florence Park went home victorious. Well played Horspath who were obviously disappointed having played so well in their previous games.
