The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the Earth but doesn't mention how.
Science attempts to understand how the universe was created but fails to understand why.
Perhaps someday, religion and science will get together and through a reasonable processes, synthesize a processes where both will be understood.
Until then, I fail to see how the argument concerning the age of the earth is necessary to the salvation of our souls.
