The Word never says we are to rely on ecumenical councils for truth. We are to "Study to show THYSELF approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
2Tim 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
Let's look once again at Colossians 1:15
"Who is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of every creature"
Christ is called the "Wisdom of God" in 1Cor 2:7,8 and Luke 11:49.
Proverbs 8 tells us that God "possessed or "acquired" Christ in the beginning. All things were created by the Son. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Proverbs 8:22,23
The Lord "possessed" Me in the beginning of His way, before His works of old. I was "set up" from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was...Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I "brought forth".
There is one God. We know that the Son was with God the Father long before He was born by woman and humbled Himself to take the form of a Servant and become flesh and blood. John 17:5, And now, O Father, glorify Thou Me with Thine Own self with the glory which I had with Thee BEFORE the world was.
The Lord was able to lay down His glory and pick it up again. He did this to finish the work His Father SENT Him on earth to do. He died and was buried and was raised after three days to not only forgive the sins of the world, but to make it possible that those who believe in Him to have hope of eternal life.
He is called the "Firstborn" of every creature. The word "begotten" in Greek means "attained, owned, and procured". The word "possessed" means "acquired". As we know, God the Father is invisible. The Son is the "express IMAGE of the invisible God". Therefore, God took upon Himself creature form to create. Did God did this so that the Son as both creator and as Redeemer, could make God known.
I don't know how else to explain this to you.
By the way, "heresy" means "a sect", "a choice", or "a division". There were several sects mentioned in Acts, like the Sadducee, Pharisees, the Nazarenes, etc. In Corinthians, there were many divisions in the church. "Heresies" are listed in the "works of the flesh" in Galatians 5:20.
There are warnings about the importance of holding fast to the form of sound word in Paul's writing. Concerning a heretic:
Titus 3:9-11
But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
What use are councils of men? All religions must have their creeds and their doctrines and their particular burdens they like to put on their members.
We have the inspired Word of God and we have the Holy Spirit to enlighten us and show us the knowledge and way of God. "By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." That is all we need.
