Dear Ray,
"You asked, "From reading this verse (John 8:42), How do you know whether there was a time in which God the Father existed without God the Son, but God then created Jesus at some point of time such that Jesus then proceeded from God?"
From reading just one verse, you would not know. That is why we are advised to compare scripture with scripture to find answers. All scripture testifies of Him.
The book of Isaiah is a good book to study concerning the person of Christ.
Isaiah 43:10,11
I am He: before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me. I, even I am the Lord; and beside Me there is no Savior.
Revelation is the unveiling or revelation of Christ. Compare Isaiah 44:6 with Rev 1:8-
Isaiah 44:6
I am the first, and I am the last; and beside Me there is no God.
Rev 1:8
I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord. Which is, and Which was, and Which is to come, the Almighty.
God took creature form to create and He took human form (flesh and blood) to redeem. Both creation and redemption are combined in Christ. (Rev 4:11; Rev 5:9)
Christ the "sent One" is found in Isaiah 48:16,17 "Come ye near unto Me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God, and His Spirit, hath SENT Me. Thus saith the Lord, Thy Redeemer..."
Christ was begotten BEFORE the world...born in the world.
The Father, the Son, and the Spirit, are each God, doing things in different ways. Isaiah 9:6 calls the Son both The mighty God and The everlasting Father.
Jesus Christ is God.
Titus 3:4,2:10 "God our Savior"
Titus 3:6 "Jesus Christ our Savior"
Titus 2:13 " God and our Savior Jesus Christ"
