The Council of Nicea II, 787- Declared that icons are acceptable aids to worship, rejecting iconoclasts (icon smashers).
icon- "an image, figure, representation. Eastern Orthodox Ch: an image or picture of Jesus, Mary, a saint, etc. venerated as sacred."
idol- "an image, form, representation consecrated as an object of worship; pagan deity."
An icon is an idol.
idolater- "a worshiper of idols; one who worships or pays divine homage to images, statues, or representations of any thing made by hands; one who worships as a deity that which is not God.
---------------------------------------------
Leviticus 19:4
Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the Lord your God.
Leviticus 26:1
Ye shall make no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God.
God is an "iconoclast":
Lev 26:30
And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcasses upon the carcasses of your idols, and My soul shall abhor you.
Isaiah 46:5-9
5 To whom will ye liken Me, and make Me equal, and compare Me, that we may be like?
6 They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.
7 They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.
8 Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors.
9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like Me...
Christ is the only image allowed.
1Cor 1o:14
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
Col 1:12-18
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15-17 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: for by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And He is the Head of the body, the church: Who is the beginning, the Firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence.
