Dear Ray,
Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.
God gave a commandment and Adam disobeyed God's commandment.
God's commandment:
Gen 2:16,17
And the Lord commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."
Adam and Eve had a good life until the day they sinned. They not only had every tree pleasant to the sight and good for food, but they also had access to the tree of life.
Because Adam chose to turn away from God and instead believe Satan,s lie, death was assured. The wages of sin are death. We start to die the day we are born. Dying, thou shalt surely die.
It was hideous to God that sinful man should have access to the tree of life, so He drove out the man from the garden of Eden and placed Cherubims and a flaming sword which turned every way, to protect the way to the tree of life.
In spite of this, the first sacrifice for sin is found in Genesis 3:21. God sacrificed an animal and covered Adam and Eve with the skins.
There is no "non-physical death" mentioned.
Gen 3:19
In the sweat of thy face thou shalt eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Gen 5:5
And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
Gen 2:7
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
When the breath or spirit of a man returns to God Who gave it, man returns to dust. This is death.
