Searcher,
I do not see the danger of using the term "spiritual death". I am hardly the first Christian to use this term. The web page I have linked (not that I endorse everything on this web page) is an example of how other Christians have used this term to describe deaths that are not physical:
What is spiritual death?
I think that in addition to the prodigal son and St. Paul, Adam and St. Peter experienced spiritual (i.e. non-physical) deaths. If Adam did not die physically on the day he ate of the forbidden fruit, then how to do explain Genesis 2:16-17 & 3:6-11 (NKJV):
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
Adam felt alienated from God, and the prodigal son felt alienated from his father, Neither died physically on that day. Do you think Adam did not die on the day that he ate of the forbidden fruit, as this was just a figure of speech?
If Adam died on that day, how was this not a spiritual death?
