Why the Gospel of John?
You mentioned the "hero" quality shown in St. Mark's gospel. That is precisely what I think new christians should stay away from. The gospel of John starts "In the beginning..." That is always a good place to start. St John emphasizes the character of Christ. If we know His character, we'll know that we can trust Him.
Also, John connects the reality of sin to the reality of forgiveness, through love. A vital bit of truth.
