Dear Ray,
The gospels all cover different aspects of God speaking by His Son. It is important for your daughter to understand that Christ not only quoted frequently from the OT, but that the main focus was the King and the earthly kingdom promised to the Jews. Matthew was specifically written to the Hebrews. (Matt 10:5,6)
Romans 15:8
"Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers"
The promises made "unto the fathers" are those promises given to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, etc. as found in Genesis 12:1-3, Gen 17:6-8, etc.
How can the NT be understood without a thorough study of the Old Testament? God first spoke directly to individuals, like Adam, Enoch, Abraham, and Job. From Exodus to Matthew 3:12, He spoke to "the fathers" by the prophets of Israel. The prophets spoke to the Jews, not to Gentiles.
What the Son spoke is recorded in the four gospels. The Son's words were not His words, but the words of His Father.
John 7:16
Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not Mine, but His that sent Me.
John 12:49,50
For I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father Which hath sent Me, He gave Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto Me, so I speak.
God speaking by His Son is the subject of prophecy. (See Deut 18:15-19)
You may want to explain to your daughter that Jesus quoted the OT scriptures many times because He is the central theme in all of those books.
Luke 24:27
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.
