It is probably idiosyncratic of me to consider Gen. then Deut. In fact I would recommend reading Job shortly thereafter. A wise man once said that Job stultified the Deuteronomist and released God to reign.
Deut. presents God repeatedly rewarding good behavior and punishing bad behavior, and this is an important concept for a youngster to learn and accept, but, of course, it is a somewhat childish view of God, hence good for a child.
After bucking up a youngsters belief and understanding of God it is important to become immersed in Jesus and the Gospels. A lot of new testament work is required before returning to the old testament.
But as I said my opinion may be a bit idiosyncratic.
