Don,
Thanks for your response.
It is my understanding that most of Mark is found in the other two synoptic gospels. How can Mark be more complex than the other gospels? By reading Mark first, one learns something of all of the gospels fastest, because Mark is the shortest.
Come to think of it, I had read the beginning of Genesis before I took my confirmation classes. This was when I had some free time at a motel on a 6th grade field trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I read up to the story of Noah's Ark and the flood, but I did not continue this in the 6th grade. Soon after I had read Mark for confirmation class, I went on the read the other 3 gospels, then Genesis and Exodus.
I am hoping that my daughter will read at least one of the gospels so that she will gain a better appreciation of what she hears about in Church. She will see that Jesus's life was very remarkable; indeed!
After reading all 4 gospels, I noticed that John's gospel was somewhat different from the other 3. The Jesus portrayed by St. John was very argumentative, and did not seem as nice a person as the Jesus in the synoptic gospels.
Why do you recommend John's gospel as the first gospel?
