Actually, the beginning is a good place to start, so why not Genesis? Without Genesis we don't know what the nature of Man nor God is and we don't know the dire and critical reason for the New Testament.
I recommend Genesis and St. John for an introduction to Scripture but anything that works is great.
I question St. Mark as a beginning because, though it is a good sequential story line, the theologies are complex and more difficult to accept.
